The Manning-Winks Theater Company at a cost of $150,000 built this beautiful art-deco theatre in 1935. Opening night was September 24 with the showing of Top Hat. The Strand remained a movie theater until 1976, when Herbert Goldstein bought the property and converted it into retail space. In 2002, a group called Friends of the Strand was created. They launched a “Bring back the Strand” campaign to raise money for restoration and an endowment for the Strand. As of this year, they have raised $3.2 million. In 2007, the interior demolition was completed and construction began. The Atlanta Lyric Theatre has made the Strand its new home.
This year the Strand will be open for “Special Tours of the Theatre.” The Strand will be open Saturday, only. An Additional $5.00 charge to tour The Strand with the Pilgrimage Ticket. Good for Pilgrimage Weekend only.
